A Day’s Plans Gone Awry

This was one of the days we were all really looking forward to.  There are lots of places where you can charter a helicopter for a tour, but Kaua’i seemed like one of those places where you HAVE to go by helicopter to really see everything, kind of like the Grand Canyon or the glaciers in Alaska.  Unfortunately for us, the flying gods simply weren’t with us.  We sat around for about two hours while the helicopter’s ground crew tried to re-work the starter mechanism. I know that once you’re up in the air, you won’t really need to re-start it, but it seemed to me that it was just as well that we didn’t tempt fate!  Maybe the flying gods truly were with us that day!

So after about two hours of sitting and waiting, we re-scheduled our tour for Saturday and hit the road to do some ore exploring to the south. One of the neat things down on the southern part of the island is that most of the towns haven’t changed with the developments going on all over the island.  Our drive took us along the southern coast as far as the town of Hanapepe, where the Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific) starts.  While this provided a wonderful vista to oooh and aaah over, our main objective was JoJo’s a shack along the town’s main drag (right across the street from the high school) where we got to enjoy one of the island’s culinary treats, a shave ice – a sweet/cold concoction that, if done correctly, is far superior to snow cones that mainlanders may be used to!  With our desire for something cold and sweet sated, we made our way back to the resort to get ready for the evening’s lua’u.

The drive to Waimea - not exactly he type of scenery you’d expect in Hawai’I

It doesn’t look like much, but it was yummy!

Not much of a question as to whether Victoria liked it or not!!!

Even though a lua’u in Hawai’i is something that is a little cliché, it really is something that need to be experienced at least once.  We were fortunate in that our Hyatt resort offered one of the best lua’us on the island.  We were a little down-hearted when we found that it was going to be held inside the massive ballroom, but once the entertainment started and the food was served (oh – and the unlimited mai tais started flowing), we didn’t seem to mind as much.  Aside from the indoor location, it really was an idyllic Hawai’ian experience!

The guest of honor arrives!

A thousand words can’t describe this picture!
