We must have been more exhausted than we thought because none of us stirred until 10:00!  After fumbling around, getting showered and dressed, we loaded up the car and headed down the mountain in search of some breakfast.  When we got down to the valley floor, we took a beautiful drive to the south through the Black Forest - what a gorgeous drive!  We made a stop-off in the town Baiersbronn for brunch and to do some brief shopping (okay, for about a three hours!).  From there, we hit the road for today's destination, the city of Freundestadt (www.freundestadt.de).

In the closing weeks of World War II, the Nazis declared Freundestadt to be a Nazi stronghold, prompting the Allies to bomb the city flat.  In the following years, the city did a masterful job of rebuilding Freundestadt, replicating much of the original architecture and style that had been destroyed.  The centerpiece of the city was the massive square (four city blocks) that the entire city spread out from.  On the perimeter of the square (and for the next block beyond it) was a ring of shops and restaurants.  Vera had told us about this phenomenal marketplace in the center of town (supposedly one of the biggest in all of Germany).  While this was a definite draw for us, the main reason we were there was a fountain Vera had also mentioned to us.

Victoria has been a fountain-junky since she was two and running through the fountains at EPCOT.  As soon as she saw this fountain, she started in with "can we go play in the fountain?"  For the next forty-five minutes, Kelley and Victoria drew lots of stares and smiles from the locals walking by - smiles because they were so cute and having so much fun, stares because it was quite chilly outside (notice my attire below).

We stopped off at a grocery store on our way out of town to stock up our kitchen before heading on to the town Schwarzenberg, right in the middle of the Black Forest for dinner and then back to the house for the night.

Tomorrow: Legoland!
