The 43.5-kilometre (27-mi.) Welland Canal, which crosses the Niagara Peninsula about 13 kilometres (8 mi.) west of Niagara Falls, provides passage for cargo ships between lakes Erie and Ontario. Completed in 1829, the first canal required 40 locks to close the difference between the two lakes. Successive canals were built in the 1840s and 1880s. In 1932 a new canal using ''twin locks'' was completed, almost 3 decades after the idea was conceived.

Eight locks now create a lift of 100 meters (330 ft.); the Twin Flight Locks and a single lock carry ships to the level of Lake Erie at Thorold. Lock 8 at Port Colborne, at 421 meters (1,380 ft.), is one of the longest in the world. The lock system can accommodate vessels up to 222 metres (725 ft.) long. Concrete tubes 7 meters (23 ft.) in diameter carry the Welland River under the ship canal downtown. The By-Pass Channel, 13 kilometres (8 mi.) long, routes shipping through Welland's east side. The East Main Street and Townline tunnels carry vehicular and rail traffic under the bypass channel. The Recreational Canal in the heart of the city is now a recreational waterway. Water skiing, rowing, canoeing and boating contests are held during the summer.
Visitors driving Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) from Buffalo to Toronto can view the Twin Flight Locks by taking the Thorold Stone Road exit west to the Thorold tunnel; from the tunnel take the Pine Street exit and follow signs. There is parking at all of the locks and an information facility at Lock 3.

Lying at Lake Erie's gateway to the Welland Canal, Port Colborne is a major inland port. Among the many areas where ships can be seen passing through the downtown area as they move through the canal is Fountain View Park, overlooking one of the world's longest locks. Complementing the city's commercial importance are its many popular beaches.
Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum [in/near Port Colborne, ON (CN)], 280 King St. encompasses seven historical buildings. The centerpiece is the home of John Williams, built in 1869. Within are displays about the history of the Welland Canal, the life of canal laborers, maritime exhibits and other historical memorabilia. Buildings include a blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and wheelhouse. Daily noon-5, May-Dec. Free. Phone (905) 834-7604.
