Visiting The Loire's Wineries
Pouilly-Fumé

This should not be considered a definitive list of wineries in the Loire Valley, but merely as a starting point.  Most wine travelers will proclaim the local "mom-and-pop" operation they discovered in the middle of nowhere as their best wine experience. Always be open to trying a new wine, as flavors and styles vary from vintage to vintage, village to village, and winemaker to winemaker.  The comments on the wines that we have provided should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.

Pouilly-Fumé

Located across the Loire from Sancerre, this wine region is based around the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire.  The wines share a distinct similarity to their cousins across the river and are usually fuller, perfumed, and firmer with more mineral qualities due to the limestone soils the vineyards are on.  The best wines of Pouilly-Fumé are usually made from vineyards located north of Pouilly on the slopes above the Loire.  Unlike Sancerre, only whites are produced here, and they tend to need more time to mature than the Sancerre (better wines can last a decade or more).

Les Berthiers (3 miles N of Pouilly-sur-Loire)

Jean-Claude Dagueneau is the largest of producers in the Dagueneau winemaking family.  His wines are clearly made with quality, not quantity in mind (especially the Domaine des Berthiers and Cuvée d'Eve.

The Redde family has been making wine on this large estate for over 100 years.  The mostly make Pouilly-Fumé, but also make their Cuvée Majorum in good years.

Les Loges

The Figeat family has been making wines for over two hundred years.  They make a very good Pouilly-sur-Loire (usually needs aging).

Pouilly-sur-Loire (9 miles SE of Sancerre)

The most famous house in Pouilly, they are best known for their Baron de L, which is exquisite through almost every vintage.  They also make delicious wines with grapes from Sancerre, Vouvray and other regions.

Also known as a négociant, the Saget family has vineyards in Pouilly and Sancerre and produces attractive wines that are definitely worth sampling.

Saint-Andelain (2 miles N of Pouilly-sur-Loire)

Tracy-sur-Loire

From the younger generation of the Dagueneau winemaking family, Didier has been described as innovative at best, wild at the extreme.  He has successfully merged the qualities of the vineyard's terroir with his winemaking skills, not limiting his style with traditional approaches.  His top wine is a cuvée called Silex, which is one of the best wines made in the region.

This property has been in the Comte d'Estutt d'Assay's family since the 1500's.  Located on the Loire near Pouilly, the vineyard produces Pouilly-Fumé that is consistently delicious.
