For centuries, Germany has been at the crossroads of Europe, with the Rhein figuring in as the principal influence. For the Roman Empire, the Rhein River was the furthest most point of Roman expansion. During the Middle Ages, the Rhine served as the regions Autobahn for commercial goods, passenger traffic, and military movement. In later centuries, it was equally important as the staging ground for Martin Luther's Reformation movement and the subsequent wars between the Protestants and the Catholics. And in the last century, it has been the site of political and military strife.
